Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection)

Otitis media is the swelling or infection located in the middle ear. Otitis media may occur as a result of a cold, sore throat, or respiratory infection. Otitis media can also affect adults, even though it is primarily a condition that occurs in children. Symptoms may include - Unusual irritability, Trouble sleeping, Tugging or pulling at one or both ears, Fever, especially in infants and younger children, Fluid draining from ear(s), Loss of balance, and Hearing difficulties, Ear pain. Various types of Otitis media comprise the following:

  • Acute otitis media: This middle ear infection occurs shortly causing swelling and redness. Fluid and mucus accumulated inside the ear may cause the child to have a fever and ear pain.
  • Otitis media with effusion: Fluid (effusion) and mucus continue to mount up in the middle ear after an initial infection recedes. The child may experience a feeling of fullness within the ear and it may have an effect on his or her hearing or may have no symptoms.
  • Chronic otitis media with effusion: The fluid remains in the middle ear for a prolonged period of time or may return again and again, even though there is no infection. This May result in difficulty in fighting new infections and may affect the child's hearing.
